Fire and Ice, ice baby…

Contrast therapy, also known as hot/cold immersion therapy.  This technique is used to detoxify and replenish the body.  Warming of the tissues causes vasodilation of the blood vessels and then introducing cold will cause vasoconstriction of the vessels.

This action results in a “pumping” of the stagnant fluid out of the area, a process called Lymphatic drainage.

In the facial treatment by iS Clinical, called the Fire and Ice Facial, it combines the two therapies together which is so beneficial to your skin.  By heating up the skin first with the intensive resurfacing masque, we not only get a chemical exfoliation but we also get detoxification.  After cleansing and extractions, the “Fire” part is first applied.  This step is a clay based mask with a cocktail of AHA’s, BHA’s and potent antioxidants like green tea extract.  Mix in some aromatics like cinnamon and pumpkin and you’ve got yourself a feeling of warm and spicy heat moving throughout your skin.  Skin becomes pink in color, thus resulting in a detox and also resurfacing of the skin.  Wait a few minutes while you smell like a pumpkin latte from Starbucks, the mask is then removed, neutralized with a second cleanse and then completed with the “Ice” part. This next step is a layer of the rejuvenating masque and… drum roll please… let the bliss begin.  This masque instantly cools the skin, hence the ice part of the facial.  Remember the face dunking into the ice cold water in the 70’s? (man, did I just age myself?) well, this step was a de-puffer from last night’s eating of heavy foods if you will.  The ice bath was anti-inflammatory and also gave the skin a nice rosy complexion, while adding in some skin tightening too.

Gua Sha Face Stone
Gua Sha Face Stone

But what I love about this step in this treatment is that we also incorporate the use of Rose Quartz stones aka Gua Sha.  The benefits of rose quartz is that it is known for its natural accelerated healing powers and has been suggested that it can improve circulation and boost neuron connectivity.  The stone itself is much harder in density compared to Jade, so it can stay cool longer and can increase benefits of wrinkle reducing when used as a massage tool over the face.  Following the flow of lymph we are moving toxins along while the the Gua Sha stone helps relieve muscle tension in the face by breaking up fascia and the connective tissue that “hug” muscles which can prevent blood from circulating properly.  As we introduce the chilled stones with a deep exhale to begin the facial massage, we are tightening up the vessels resulting in an intense glow and gentle lift in the skin. It’s like having someone draw on your face with an ice cube!!  The rejuvenating mask is packed with Hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, licorice extract and more green tea extract.  These ingredients will soothe and hydrate the skin, leaving a firm and bright finish.  A little blushing may occur on some, but who wouldn’t when you’re looking this fine!  The Fire and Ice facial has little to no downtime, peeling or other negative side effects. Frequency of treatments, because you know you’ll want more, can be done 4-6 weeks apart.  iS Clinical products are non systemic, meaning it won’t absorb into the blood stream but if you are pregnant or nursing, it is best you consult your doctor to be sure.

The combination for traditional Eastern Asian practices with Western Medicine is the perfect balance of a relaxing treatment experience with the added bonus of results driven Medical grade skincare.
